Many Australians are angry that the conservative prime minister and his so-called Liberal Party killed a marriage equality bill and are now pushing a voter referendum on the matter. Thousands took to the streets of Melbourne, Australia's second-most populous city, on Saturday to air their grievances.
Labor politicians like Bill Shorten told the crowd that if they were in power Australia would have marriage equality.
"This week Mr. Abbott and his right-wing Liberals broke the heart of the nation," Shorten said, according to The Age. "They are holding Australia back. It should not be the case that people are treated as a second-class citizen merely because of who they love... Why is Mr Abbott so stuck in the past that he's worried about who someone else marries? Get a life!"
Another politician at the rally, Greens MP Adam Bandt, said that Abbott's delaying tactics on marriage have "signed this government's death warrant."
