Gay Couple Make History as First to Marry in an Immigration Detention Center

Tom Swann, 58, and Guillermo Hernandez, 21, of Palm Springs, Calif., made history this week as the first same-sex couple to get married inside an immigration detention center, reports The Desert Sun.

The two met last May, fell in love, and moved into a trailer park together. By December, they were engaged. Only three days after their engagement, Hernandez was arrested by immigration officers. Hernandez was brought to the U.S. as a child, but what led to his arrest is a string of misdemeanors. Hernandez has been in custody at the Imperial Regional Detention Facility in Calexico for the past two months.

Swann is hoping their marriage will create an opportunity for Hernandez to stay in the United States, if he is deported. His next deportation hearing is scheduled for March 23.

If his groom is deported, Swann says that Hernandez may stay in Mexicali, Mexico. Swann plans to make regular visits, unless Hernandez moves further south, which means Swann is open to the possibility of moving to Mexico to be near his spouse.

"I would consider selling my mobile home and moving to Mexico with him," he told The Desert Sun.
