The survey -- simply a mail-in response to the question, "Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?" -- is non-binding. Many have criticized the process as a "glorified opinion poll," with no political consequence. Regardless, the majority of the nation has taken an interest.
Equality Campaign executive director Tiernan Brady believes the majority of Australians will support marriage equality. "I think we've confidently won the argument," he told Sky News this week.
Opponents of same-sex marriage have sent out numerous homophobic and misleading robocalls from Ted Cruz's pollster and held a Straight Lives Matter demonstration, which took place at a memorial for LGBT Holocaust victims.
The survey closes November 7, with results released a week later.
