Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black are getting the full tabloid treatment.
The couple told British tabloid The Sun -- which ran a front-page story -- that they took a seven-month break and that while they were separated, Daley shared a intimate video of himself on Snapchat with a fan. A portion of the video, with Daley in his underwear, has so far leaked online. Daley, the British Olympic diver, says he and the fan never met but messaged several times.
"In the modern world this is what can happen," Daley told The Sun, about the Snapchat video being posted publicly. "Things are more accessible online, and distributed, and they spread like wildfire."
Black, who was once also victim to intimate photos being spread online, defended his fiance's privacy, saying the couple hadn't told many people about their break. "What Tom did in that time was his personal business," Black told The Sun.
Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter who is readying for the release the next month of his ABC miniseries on LGBT rights, When We Rise, also told the tabloid that it was missing the real secret.
"Tom and I talked about anything and everything that went on," he said. "That's the secret to how we are so close and can survive tough times."
The two are in some ways experiencing the same glare of celebrity couplehood as straight couples. And yet NBC Sports never noted they were together or that Daley is gay during its coverage of Olympic diving, so all things aren't equal. The couple was featured last year on Out magazine's February "Love" issue and has since reunited, and the wedding date is set.
"Sometimes it takes something like a little bit of time apart to realize how fond you are of each other," said Daley in The Sun interview.
Some on Twitter expressed sympathy for the couple having to experience ups and downs so publicly.
