GLAAD Media Awards Offers Huge, Diverse List of LGBTQ Nominees

The lineup of nominations for this year's GLAAD Media Awards, announced Wednesday morning, is the biggest and one of the most diverse ever, with 176 nominees in 30 categories, reflecting the expansion in representation of LGBTQ people in all types of media.

"There are more nominees for the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards than ever before not only because LGBTQ diversity and inclusion has progressed, but because GLAAD's work to forward LGBTQ visibility has never been more important," said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD president and CEO, in a press release. "Media stories and storylines that shed light on LGBTQ people of different backgrounds, genders, races, religions, and more, are needed to counter the current politically and culturally divisive moment. The GLAAD Awards this year not only celebrate new LGBTQ stories that educate, entertain, and affect positive cultural change, but remind LGBTQ people and allies that in an election year, our visibility and voices have never been more important."

The category for Outstanding Broadway Production returned this year, for the first time since the 24th awards, and the Outstanding Kids & Family Programming category expanded to 10 nominees as a result of an increase in LGBTQ images across children's and family television programming and an increase in GLAAD's work to advocate for inclusion in this genre.

The nominees were published, released, or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2019. There are 148 English-language nominees and 28 Spanish-language nominees. They are selected on the basis of fair, accurate, and inclusive representations; boldness and originality; impact; and overall quality.

Netflix scored the most nominations with a total of 15, followed by HBO with eight. ABC, CBS, and NBC each earned four nominations. Apple TV+ and Disney+ received their first nominations for Dickinson and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, respectively. Several of the nominated television series have leads that are LGBTQ people of color, including Euphoria, Killing Eve, The L Word: Generation Q, Pose, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Dear White People, One Day at a Time, Superstore, Vida, and Tales of the City.

There are three Special Recognition Awards: for Special, a Netflix short-form coming-of-age comedy series about a gay man with cerebral palsy, created, written, and executive-produced by Ryan O'Connell, who also stars; and for LGBTQ journalists Karen Ocamb of the Los Angeles Blade and Mark Segal of the Philadelphia Gay News.

Also in the realm of journalism, The Advocate and its sibling publication Out are nominated in the category of Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage. "The Trans Obituaries Project" by Raquel Willis of Out is nominated in the category of Outstanding Magazine Article.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies, which fund GLAAD's work to accelerate LGBTQ acceptance, will be held in New York at the Hilton Midtown on March 19 and in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on April 16. The Los Angeles ceremony will include the presentation of the Vanguard Award to music star Taylor Swift and the Stephen F. Kolzak Award to writer-producer-director Janet Mock.
