The Advocate and its sister publications under the Pride Media umbrella received several nominations for the 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

Its nods include Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage -- a category it won in 2020. This year, the LGBTQ+ magazine will vie against mainstream outlets Billboard, People, and Variety as well as its sister health magazine, Plus.

Additionally, The Advocate was nominated in Outstanding Print Article for "20 LGBTQ+ People Working to Save Lives on the Frontline," profiles of out essential workers by Diane Anderson-Minshall, David Artavia, Tracy Gilchrist, Desiree Guerrero, Jeffrey Masters, Donald Padgett, and Daniel Reynolds.

This category also highlighted an article from Out magazine, "It's Time for a New Tipping Point for Transgender Folks in Hollywood," by Tre'vell Anderson. Anderson is nominated twice in this category, the other nomination coming for an Essence cover story, "Why Billy Porter Is a National Treasure."

The GLAAD Media Awards, established in 1990, "honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues." In addition to print and digital media, GLAAD honors film and television productions that excel at this purpose.

In total, there are 198 nominees this year within 28 categories. Of those nominees, 58 were from streaming services, 29 were from cable channels, and 14 were from broadcast TV. Netflix led the pack with 26 nods, followed by HBO Max (9), Amazon (4), Hulu (4), HBO (4), Cartoon Network (3), Disney+ (3), and PBS (3). Of note, the Hallmark Channel also received its first nod for The Christmas House, a gay-inclusive holiday film.

To no one's surprise, gay Hollywood guru Ryan Murphy was involved with six of the nominated productions: The Prom, The Boys in the Band, Circus of Books, Hollywood, Ratched, 9-1-1: Lone Star.

The Prom, the feel-good Netflix musical about lesbian teens fighting high school bigotry, is competing in the category of Outstanding Film - Wide Release, where it is up against The Craft: Legacy (Sony Pictures), Happiest Season (Hulu), Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (Netflix), and The Old Guard (Netflix).

In the category of Outstanding Film - Limited Release, The Boys in the Band (Netflix) is up against Ammonite (Neon), And Then We Danced (Music Box Films), The Half of It (Netflix), I Carry You With Me (Sony Pictures Classics), Kajillionaire (Focus Features), The Life Ahead (Netflix), Lingua Franca (Array/Netflix), Monsoon (Strand Releasing), and The True Adventures of Wolfboy (Vertical Entertainment).

Additionally, GLAAD is bringing back the Barbara Gittings Award for Excellence in LGBTQ Media. This year, that honor will go to Windy City Times, Chicago's vanguard LGBTQ+ publication that recently retired its print edition, which first appeared in 1985.

The 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards, presented by Gilead and Ketel One Vodka, will take place virtually in April. Learn more at GLAAD.org and see the full list of nominees below.
