After being named Spouse of the Year by Military Spouse, an organization that supports military families when their husbands and wives are deployed, Brian Alvarado and his husband, Matthew, appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Alvarado is the first honoree who's part of a same-sex couple.

Alvardo himself comes from a military family; his father served in Vietnam. He was recently appointed as the command ombudsman for Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center, which carried information between deployed Navy sailors and their families. Previously he had served on a Coronado, Calif.-based family readiness group panel.

"One thing is for sure, my life has forever benefited by being a military spouse and being a welcomed member of a leadership team who works hard to make sure that our community is taken care of in all of the delicate ways it needs," Alvarado says on his military spouse biography page.
