"Dancing in the Living Room"is Cameron Hawthorn's coming out message to his fans.
Through a series of tender and loving vignettes, Cameron Hawthorn's new music video highlights the beautiful intimacy of dancing with a partner in the comfort of your home. But it's more than a music video premiere -- this is his coming-out letter to his fans.
Each moment of "Dancing in the Living Room" gives the audience a chance to witness love in its purest form. From a lesbian couple just moving in together, to an older pair dancing in their kitchen of who knows how long, the video progresses to finally show Hawthorn slowly dancing with his partner. The image of the two men holding each other while he sings "I've got you in my arms and I'm right at home" is a powerful message for anyone, let alone a country singer.
In thinking about the inspiration for the song, Hawthorn shares, "I remember always thinking how special it was to dance freely with my boyfriend in the living room of our apartment -- being gay, it's not as easy to dance as a couple in public together as it is for a straight couple. I wanted to express how special that moment is for a couple, when it's just the two of you in the privacy of your own four walls."
Though the conservative nature of country music has typically left queer singers out of the genre, singers like Chely Wright and Ty Herndon have helped to change the expectations. Their openness about their identities helped pave the way for singers like Hawthorn. His vulnerability in practice and in his music encourages people from all backgrounds to be true to themselves.
