Eminem-Elton John duet dominates Grammy Awards
Eminem may have lost the coveted Album of the Year award to Steely Dan's Two Against Nature, but the rapper was clearly the main focus of attention at the 43rd annual Grammy Awards. Eminem's controversial duet with Elton John on "Stan" was saved until the end of the show--and promoted at every commercial break--while protesters from gay and women's advocacy groups picketed the singer outside. (A few gay counterprotesters were on hand as well, with signs reading "Faggots 4 Eminem.") Questions pitched at the musicians on hand at the event were often about Eminem as well, prompting a variety of responses: Lesbian singer Melissa Etheridge defended Eminem's First Amendment rights, while blues legend Taj Mahal said Eminem is "very funny.... I'm serious." While accepting the Best Rap Album award for his multiplatinum The Marshall Mathers LP, which contains lyrics that some consider homophobic and misogynist, Eminem said, "Well, what should I say first? First of all I want to thank everybody who could look past the controversy and see the album for what it is and what it isn't." In all, the rapper took home three Grammys, including Rap Solo Performance for "The Real Slim Shady" and Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Forgot About Dre," performed with his producer, Dr. Dre. Also taking home awards were the openly gay Elton John, who picked up a Musical Show Album Grammy for Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida, and lesbian classical guitarist Sharon Isbin, winning Instrumental Soloist Performance (Without Orchestra) for Dreams of a World.
