races in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio

Early election returns show victories in Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania for gay-friendly candidates.

Several major networks have called three major races early in the evening before most of their returns were reported. In a symbolic win for gays and lesbians across the country Republican senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania is being reported as losing to Bob Casey, the state treasurer. Early returns showed Santorum with 35% of the vote and Casey with 65%.

In New York, early projections show state attorney feneral Eliot Spitzer winning the gubernatorial race with a clear majority over Republican John Faso. Sptitzer has said he would legalize same-sex marriage if given the opportunity.

In the Ohio Senate race, Democrat Sherrod Brown was declared the victor over Republicam Mike DeWine. (The Advocate)
