The Rhode Island supreme court issued a request Wednesday for more information to be provided regarding an LGBT couple's divorce before a lower court can claim jurisdiction over the case. In Rhode Island the law is unclear on whether same-sex marriages are valid; however, couples are permitted to cross the border to Massachusetts and marry, the Associated Press reports.

Margaret Chambers and Cassandra Ormiston of Providence filed for divorce last year with the Rhode Island family court, but the court then asked the supreme court to decide if Rhode Island judges have authority to grant divorces to same-sex couples, according to the AP.

However, the supreme court returned the case, asking the family court to answer a set of questions before it can proceed with a decision. Among them are whether the couple holds a valid marriage license and if Chambers has been a resident of Rhode Island long enough to file for divorce in the state. (The Advocate)
