Lesbian tennis
icon Martina Navratilova will be honored at the 30th
anniversary gala for the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
She will receive the Voice and Visibility award, which
honors those who have demonstrated a commitment to
LGBT rights.
The tennis pro
publicly announced that she was a lesbian in 1981 and has
been vocal about LGBT causes ever since.
Navratilova is
arguably one of the the greatest tennis players of all
time, with 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 41 Grand Slam
doubles titles, and a record nine Wimbledon women's
singles titles under her belt. She was inducted into
the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000.
The event will
take place at San Francisco's Fort Mason Festival Pavilion
at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. The ever-witty Kate Clinton
will return in a command performance as emcee.
