New England's
leading creator and presenter of queer theater, the Theater
Offensive, presents the world premiere of the musical
Surviving the Nian. The show will run April
14-May 5 at the Roberts Theatre at the Stanford
Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts.
The musical
follows the journey of Kaylin, who returns home to Hong Kong
after a five-year absence to introduce her lover, Asha, and
her new life plan to her family. The musical explores
Kaylin's relationships and loyalties as well as her
ability to deal with her family's own plans for her.
The music and
lyrics were written by Melissa Li, and the book was written
by Li and Abe Rybeck. The show has been developed over the
past four years through the Theater Offensive's Plays
at Work Program. It is directed by Patrick Wang.
