John Edwards got
some of his biggest applause of the debate when he
slammed Clinton and Obama for their back-and-forth. It gave
him the opportunity to rise above their fray, and he
seized it, at the same time sticking to his campaign
message of helping working-class and
poor families.
A new ad using
footage from Monday's debate doesn't merely stress
Edwards rising above the fray; it allows him to attack both
rivals with their own words.
Edwards trails
Clinton and Obama in polls in South Carolina, but a survey
taken in the days after the debate showed that his support
in the state among white voters has grown from
28% to 40%. Obama's support among whites has fallen.
TITLE: ''Grown
Up.''
LENGTH: 30
seconds.
AIRING: South
Carolina.
SCRIPT: Barack
Obama: ''While I was working on those streets, you were a
corporate lawyer sitting on the board of Wal-Mart.''
Hillary Rodham
Clinton: ''I was fighting against those ideas when you
were practicing law and representing your contributor,
Rezko, in his slum-landlord business in inner-city
Chicago.''
John Edwards:
''This kind of squabbling -- how many children is this
going to get health care? How many people are going to get
an education from this? This is not about us
personally. It is about what we are trying to do for
this country.''
''I'm John
Edwards, and I approve this message.''
KEY IMAGES: The
ad uses footage from Monday night's debate in Myrtle
Beach, S.C., when his rivals' gloves came off and then
features Edwards backhanding both for the spat. It
ends with a still shot of Edwards giving a campaign
speech as he gives his approval message in a
voice-over. (AP)
