A majority of Vermont residents -- 54% -- say they favor same-sex marriage, according to an unofficial survey taken March 11. The results represent an 8% increase over last year, WPTZ in Montpelier reported Monday. Thirty-seven percent of respondents are opposed to same-sex marriage. State senator and Johnson State College political science professor William Doyle administered the poll and compiled the results, something he has done every March for the past several years.

Nearly 7,000 people responded to this year's survey. The Doyle poll is not a scientific survey but an annual sampling of views by voters taking part in Town Meeting Day, which is usually held on the first Tuesday in March for citizens to discuss issues in their towns. Vermont's annual Town Meeting Day is a 200-year tradition. (The Advocate)
