Los Angeles Police chief William Bratton has joined other high-profile supporters of marriage equality by donating to gay rights organization Equality California.
Bratton and his wife, Rikki Kleiman, formerly of Court TV, made the donation in honor of celebrity publicist Howard Bragman's wedding to his longtime partner, Chuck O'Donnell, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday. The grooms requested donations to Equality California in lieu of gifts from friends and others who wanted to honor their wedding.
"The constitution guarantees life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," Bratton said in the article. "I see no reason why gays can't pursue happiness through marriage."
Other celebrities to donate to the organization in the couple's honor include actor Isaiah Washington and tennis star Martina Navratilova.
Equality California, with several local and national groups, is working to fight Proposition 8, which would amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage. In May California became the second U.S. state after Massachusetts to allow gay marriage after the state supreme court ruled it unconstitutional to deny gay couples the right to marry. (The Advocate)
