Jim Andre has
been going to the gym for nearly 40 years, but that
doesn't mean he likes it. "I'd
rather eat less than have to exercise more," says
the 60-year-old. Although he jokes that attempting
vegetarian and raw-food diets "ruined my social
life," he's found he stays healthiest by
reading labels and cutting back on processed foods.
"There is a lot of pressure in the gay
community to try to maintain our looks and appearance,
because sex is a big factor--for probably all men, but
particularly gay men," he says.
"There's that interest in being able to
hook up or match up with people that we're interested
in."
So is he
attracted to his own physical type? "Absolutely
not!" he says, laughing. "I'm
more attracted to smooth, boyish types. I tend to get
cruised by a lot of bigger, muscular guys, but it's
just not my cup of tea." Andre says he's
happy with his appearance for the most part. "My
tendency is to be grateful that I'm in as good a
shape and look as good as I do," he says.
"Especially since I'm getting older."
But he's intrigued by plastic surgery, which
some of his close friends have undergone in an attempt
to stave off the aging process. "Whether I would
do it myself, I'm not sure," he muses.
"It's not out of the
question."
