Immunization has changed the face of modern medicine.
The word vaccine calls to mind the great smallpox epidemic that affected Great Britain. This was a virus transmitted through cattle called cow pox that was contracted by humans when milking their cows. In 1796, Edward Jenner developed the vaccine for smallpox, essentially wiping it out. The practice of vaccination has extended over the whole civilized world, and its value in preventing disease is a testament to the men that discovered them.
