Venereal is taken from the word Venus, the goddess of love in Roman mythology. Venereal disease (VD) has been replaced by the more contemporary term sexually transmitted diseases (STD), which describes infections that are passed on during sexual intercourse, whether it is anal, oral, or vaginal. Due to the higher rates of anonymous sex and sex associated with Internet chat room, gay men have a higher risk of developing STDs. Common STDs include gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, herpes, pubic lice (crabs), scabies, hepatitis A, B, C, parasites, and the human papillomavirus (HPV).

To reduce your chances of infection, follow these suggestions:

* Use condoms correctly every time you have sex. * Urinate after ejaculation. * Limit the number of sex partners. * If you think you are infected, avoid sexual contact and see a doctor.
