Sen. Hillary
Rodham Clinton is under consideration for a top Cabinet
position in President-elect Barack Obama's forthcoming
administration. The New York senator, defeated by
Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination, met
with him in Chicago on Thursday to discuss a possible
appointment, the Associated Press reports.
According to the
AP, Clinton's motorcade was spotted departing from the
office where Obama is overseeing his transition to the White
House, and a Democratic official confirmed the two
met. Two Democratic officials told the New York
Post that Clinton is a serious contender for
secretary of state.
While there's
long been speculation about a Clinton role in an Obama
administration, talk has ramped up considerably since last
week's election. An appointment would be seen as a way
of healing any lingering division in the Democratic
party over the two rivals' hotly contested primary
race; many of Obama's current advisers, like transition
chief John Podesta and chief of staff Rahm Emanuel,
also served in President Bill Clinton's
administration.
Other contenders
for the country's top diplomatic position include New
Mexico governor Bill Richardson and Massachusetts senator
John Kerry, both former presidential hopefuls, the
Post reports. (The Advocate)
