A spokesperson for the
Log Cabin Republicans said an e-mail that was sent out to
members Wednesday taking issue with Republican Party chief's
comments on civil unions but with the subject line 'Log Cabin
Congratulates Michael Steele' was the result of a clerical
error.
The e-mail used the
same subject line as one sent by the organization on January 30
after Steele became chair.
"The subject line for
the press release on February 24th was the result of a clerical
error," Log Cabin said in a statement to Advocate.com. "It
is a reflection of the previous release when Michael Steele was
elected as Chairman. We disagree with the comments Chairman
Steele recently made regarding civil unions, however, we look
forward to a continued dialogue."
The e-mail sent out by
Log Cabin in response to Steele's comments said his views on
civil unions "marginalize gay and lesbian Americans, and
further alienate" moderate voters.
Earlier this week,
Steele responded to a questions by radio host Mike Gallagher on
whether Republicans should consider civil unions for same-sex
couples. He said it was out of the question.
"No, no no,"
he said. "What would we do that for? What are you, crazy?
No. Why would we backslide on a core, founding value of this
country? I mean, this isn't something that you just kind of
like, "Oh, well, today I feel, you know, loosey-goosey on
marriage." (Advocate.com)
