More than 60 legislators in Maine have co-sponsored a new same-sex marriage bill in the state, headed up by Democratic Senator Dennis Damon of Trenton. According to the Associated Press, support for the measure has come in large numbers from both parties, causing the leadership to make sponsorship of the bill unlimited.
With the economy in crisis, supporters of the bill argue that same-sex marriage could help save the tourism industry in the state. Opponents have already begun mobilizing efforts to prevent the passage of the bill.
The measure is expected to pass through the committee stage with little trouble, but it's future beyond that point remains uncertain. If the bill does get passed into law, Maine will join Connecticut and Massachusetts as the only states in the U.S. to allow gay marriage.
