Stroll Buenos Aires' gracious Champs-Elysees equivalent, Avenida Alvear , home to a host of cafes, antique stores, and galleries. For more art, antiques, crafts, and interesting street performers, wander the San Telmo and La Boca areas. Hip boutiques are crammed in the lively streets of Palermo Viejo .

The beautiful Galerias Pacifico (Calle Florida 750; +54-11-5555-5110; GaleriasPacifico.com.ar) has stunning architecture and an incredible domed ceiling, adorned with frescoes. Nearly 200 stores offer an abundance of shopping temptations. In Recoleta, Patio Bullrich (Del Libertador 750; +54-11-4814-7400) is the city's main upscale mall, with almost 70 stores and an appealing and easy to negotiate food court. Alto Palermo Shopping Center (Santa Fe 3253; +54-11-5777-8000; AltoPalermo.com.ar) also offers excellent shopping opportunities throughout its 150 stores.

For gay-specific souvenirs, stock up on same-sex soap (boys holding hands with boys or girls with girls) at Sabater Hnos (Gurruchaga 1821; +54-11-4833-3004; Shnos.com.ar) in Palermo Viejo.
