New emojis will be released later this year, Emojipedia announced Thursday. A couple of the draft emojis under consideration are gender-inclusive characters.
Ahead of World Emoji Day on Saturday, Emojipedia posted an image on Twitter of the latest draft list. The final list will be completed in September, according to the account.
Along with hand hearts, pointing fingers, a disco ball, and a hamsa, the drafts include a "person with a crown," "pregnant man," and "pregnant person."
In a blog post announcing the emoji drafts, Emojipedia describes the person with a crown as "a gender-inclusive alternative to the existing emojis for princess and prince." The pregnant man and pregnant person draft emojis recognize the pregnancies of trans men and nonbinary people.
Options for a gender-inclusive dancer emoji were also shown in the blog post, but that emoji will be considered in the future.
"The above additions will mean that nearly all emojis can have default a gender-neutral option, with the choice to use a woman or man where relevant," the blog post reads.
The current exceptions are being reviewed, Emojipedia added.
Users can now vote for their most anticipated emoji.
The emojis on the draft list may be changed or even removed before September. The rollout for the emojis that make the cut will depend on the operating system, app, or device. Emojipedia expects Google Pixel to have the new emojis by late 2021. Apple, Twitter, Samsung, and Facebook are projected to have access to the new emojis in the first half of 2022.
