A Florida man was arrested Thursday evening following a violent dispute with his brother.
David Martinez, 35, was taken into custody after reportedly threatening to "cut the gay out" of his brother while sharpening a large kitchen knife, according to police who arrested him on multiple charges.
Martinez's brother said he had been acting strangely since the previous night, authorities told local TV station WPLG.
According to the Miami-Dade Police Department report, the victim first tried to leave the house in Miami when his brother threatened to kill him. Martinez followed him outside, grabbed him, and demanded that he come back inside. In fear, the victim returned to the house with Martinez but was eventually able to exit the house again and called on a friend to contact the police.
When police arrived on the scene, they attempted to detain Martinez, but the suspect reportedly "became irate" and a struggle ensued. According to the police report, the "defendant was grabbed by officers and redirected to the ground. Officers waited until other units arrived and took the defendant into custody without further incident." Police also seized the knife from the home.
Martinez was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, and false imprisonment, all of which are felonies and carry the possibility of a life sentence.
He was also charged with two counts of resisting an officer without violence, both of which are misdemeanors. Martinez is being held in the county jail in lieu of a $22,000 bond.
