WNBA star Brittney Griner is being detained in Russia.
Earlier this month, news broke that WNBA star and two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner was being held in Russia. According to some reports, she had been there for three weeks. Russian authorities allege that Griner was stopped in an airport and was found to be transporting hashish oil, an illegal substance. Now the first video footage of Griner has surfaced since she was detained.
\u201cWNBA center Brittney Griner appeared in a Moscow court today, where she reportedly pleaded not guilty (to drug charges). The court extended her detention for another two months, according to @mash_breaking\u201d— Mike Eckel (@Mike Eckel) 1647515590
In the video, Griner was reportedly walking to a court date about her detainment. In court, a Russian judge granted a petition and reportedly extended the detention until at least May 19. If Griner stays for the duration, she will have been kept in the custody of Russian authorities for five months.
The 31-year-old faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Prior to this footage surfacing, videos and photographs of Griner during her detention had been scarce. An undated mug shot was released by Russian media last week. Prior, a video had leaked of Griner in the airport as she was being detained.
The athlete had been in Russia to play basketball, which is common for WNBA players looking to supplement their income. It is expected that she was at the airport where she was detained as she tried to exit the country.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that his office is working to bring Griner home.
"Whenever an American is detained anywhere in the world, we, of course, stand ready to provide every possible assistance, and that includes in Russia," he said at a news conference. "We have an embassy team that's working on the cases of other Americans who are detained in Russia.
"We're doing everything we can to see to it that their rights are upheld and respected."
