A South Carolina lawmaker says Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer can't be gay because he's such a "good boy."

"I have known Andre since he was 8 years old," Republican state senator Jake Knotts told CNN. "Ain't a homosexual bone in his body. That boy is a good boy. It's just an attempt to prevent Andre from becoming governor."

Knotts added that Bauer could not possibly be gay because "Every time I have seen Andre and as long as I've known him, he's always had a pretty girlfriend. They love him, he treats them well, he treats them nice, he treats them with respect. He doesn't hang out in bars and go from woman to woman. Everybody that knows Andre knows for sure he ain't been seen hanging on to no damn man."

Knotts wrote in a letter to fellow senators last week on September 2 that he has also been the subject of rumors spread by Sanford and his aides.

Bauer was outed by blogger Mike Rogers on August 31 on BlogActive.com. Rogers cited several sources who claim to have had sexual encounters with Bauer.

Bauer, who called on Sanford to resign following revelations of the governor's extramarital affair and possible ethics violations, has denied the gay rumors. Bauer is eyeing a race to succeed Sanford in 2010.
