Houston controller Annise Parker, an out lesbian who is running for mayor, was attacked on the basis of her sexual orientation in materials e-mailed by an antigay group on Sunday.
The homophobic attack arrived via a press release to promote the Christians for Better Government voter guide, sent to thousands of potential Houston voters, according to the blog GayPolitics.com.
"Annise Parkers lifestyle that of being a HOMOSEXUAL is not the proper role model to lead the fourth largest city in the United States," said the press release, as reported by GayPolitics.com. "The Bible speaks clearly against the lifestyle she represents, James 1:8 says, 'A double minded man is confused in all his ways'. She does not believe in what the scripture says about her lifestyle which in return means she doesn't believe in God."
Parker is one of four major candidates in the nonpartisan mayoral election scheduled for November 3. Should she win, she would lead the country's fourth-largest city.
