Adam Lambert is apologizing for his performance on theAmerican Music Awards ... sort of. The American Idol runner-up explains what was going through his head leading up to the much-maligned performance on Tuesday's EllenDeGeneres Show, saying he thinks people were offended because they "aren't used to seeing gay men portrayed like that on TV."

"I forgot that this is the first time people were seeing me on TV again, after Idol, and I didn't really think about that as objectively as I might have wanted to," he tells DeGeneres on today's show.

"I think in hindsight, I look back on it and I go, 'OK, maybe that wasn't the best first impression to make again or the first second impression.' I had a good time up there ... I had fun ... I respect people, and I feel like people walked away from that feeling disrespected, and I would never intend to disrespect anybody."

DeGeneres quickly followed Lambert's explanation with some words of her own. "I feel like, if you're going to be offended by a show of sexuality onstage, then you should be offended by all shows of sexuality -- it should be all forms."
