"Unjust, extreme, and un-Christian towards homosexuals" -- that's how Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren described the proposed Ugandan antihomosexuality bill in a YouTube video posted Wednesday.

Rick Warren, a conservative preacher and a vocal opponent of marriage equality, said he was never involved with the "terrible" legislation and urged that the bill be dropped. Blog reports this week accused Warren of quietly supporting the bill, which until recently proposed the death penalty or life imprisonment for homosexual acts in certain circumstances.

Although he preached respect for gays in the video -- called "Letter to the Pastors of Uganda" -- Warren did make the point that he was against same-sex marriage: "We can never deny or water down what God's word clearly says and teaches about sexuality. ... Let me be clear, God's word states that all sex outside of marriage is not what God intends. And Jesus reaffirmed what Moses wrote -- that marriage is intended to be one man and one woman committed to each other for life."
