Television's leading awards show may soon see some competition.

Sony Pictures Television president Steve Mosko is looking for a network to host an annual rival to the Emmys, according to Variety. The studio is also looking to possibly partner with the Paley Center for Media.

In 2001, CBS and the American Film Institute partnered on an awards show to honor achievement in television, but the low-rated showcase didn't last long.

"We're in very exploratory stages of setting up awards for excellence on TV, called The Paley Awards," a Paley Center spokeswoman told the New York Post. She did not, however, say that they are viewing the awards as competition for the Emmys, but a source told the Post that the show would be more of a Golden Globes-like event.

The interest comes as more premium and basic cable shows are starting to earn more Emmy awards than shows on the big four networks.
