Big Win for Partners of Foreign Service Officials

Life just got a bit easier for the same-sex partners of foreign service officers such as ambassadors and consuls -- the State Department issued new rules making it easier for them to obtain visas as well as access to overseas employment opportunities and embassy medical units.

The DC Agenda obtained an undated memorandum that lists these changes, which are part of President Obama's June order that granted certain partner benefits to gay and lesbian federal workers. The new rules also open up resources for helping domestic partners of foreign service officers move abroad and assistance in emergency evacuation should it become necessary.
