Howard Zinn, the author of the enduring A People's History of the United States, died Wednesday in Santa Monica, Calif,. at age 87.

The leftist People's History poked holes in the legacies of popular presidents and accused Christopher Columbus of genocide, while reserving accolades for feminists and war resisters, reports Forbes.com. The book has become a favorite of school curricula and celebrated writers, like the gay author of The Color Purple, Alice Walker.

Zinn spent his life writing, voicing opposition to war, and supporting the rights of workers.
