The Fair Immigration Reform Movement, a coalition of grassroots organizations, released a statement Tuesday calling for LGBT inclusion in plans to overhaul the nation's immigration policies.
FAIR endorsed the Uniting American Families Act, or UAFA, which would allow gay and lesbian Americans to sponsor their foreign-born partners to become U.S. citizens. FAIR also acknowledged other issues that arise with immigration.
"While we believe that comprehensive immigration reform will benefit lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) immigrants, we recognize that the intersection of migration, sexuality and gender expression impact LGBT immigrants in disparate ways," the statement read. "Issues of detention, deportation and asylum are not only issues of dignity for LGBT immigrants, but often also issues of safety. We must remember these experiences in the struggle for immigration reform."
