Out designer Jason Wu's white chiffon gown worn by first lady Michelle Obama to the inaugural balls will soon be on display at the Smithsonian Institution.

Wu plans to join Mrs. Obama on Tuesday in Washington when the first lady will donate the gown, covered in fabric petals and dotted with beads. A new gallery for the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History first ladies' exhibit will open Wednesday, showcasing clothing representing first ladies from Mamie Eisenhower to Mrs. Obama, including 10 inaugural gowns. The full first ladies' collection consists of 24 dresses, including 12 inaugural gowns. The Smithsonian has asked each first lady since 1912 to give the collection something that represents her. While donating the inaugural ball gown has become tradition, it is not required.
