Olympic medal-winning equestrian Darren Chiacchia could face prison time for allegedly having sex with his boyfriend and not disclosing he was HIV-positive.
The New York Times reports that Chiacchia, who won bronze as part of the Olympic 2004 equestrian team but later suffered a devastating injury after falling off a horse, was arrested in January. He will be in court in June to challenge accusations that he knowingly spread HIV.
He pleaded not guilty in February.
If convicted, Chiacchia "faces up to 30 years in prison under a Florida law passed in 1997 that makes it a felony for people with HIV to have sexual intercourse without informing their partners of their condition," writes the Times, which added that 32 states have criminal statutes that apply to people who knowingly or unknowingly spread HIV. People in Missouri can be sent to prison for life for spreading HIV, even if it wasn't intentional.
