Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee went head-to-head with Rosie O'Donnell on the comedian's radio show Saturday.

Huckabee angered some when he likened gay and lesbian couples adopting children to the adoption of puppies in an interview with the student newspaper at the College of New Jersey earlier this month.

"What I'm saying is that I think the ideal environment for children is in a relationship that has both a mother and a father," he told O'Donnell, according to theNew York Daily News.

However, O'Donnell said, "there are half a million kids in foster care in America. To have public officials deem homosexuals unworthy of parenting is disastrous for the nation, for equality, and for humanity, and Mike, for Christianity."

O'Donnell also talked about raising her own children.

"I've spent my life, Mike, dedicated to taking care of the children that other people don't want," O'Donnell said.

Huckabee added that he had a "great respect for [her] choices" and that her "children are very fortunate."
