A teenager previously identified as a friend to the late Jack Frew was charged with the gay 16-year-old's murder in Scotland.

London's Guardian reported Monday, "Craig Roy, 17, made no plea as he was remanded in custody at Hamilton sheriff court today after he appeared in court over the killing."

Frew (pictured), who was openly gay, was a popular student at Duncanrig secondary school. His body was found close to a cycle path in the woods in East Kilbride near Glasgow; he had been stabbed and beaten. Speculation immediately turned to an antigay motive.

Roy, now accused of the murder, was injured in the attack and initially treated and released from the hospital.

The murder has devastated Frew's parents and the students and staff at his school, which canceled classes and planned memorials in addition to the tributes established on Facebook.
