The Victory Fund is basking in Nickie Antonio's history-making primary win earlier this month, which set her on a course to become Ohio's first openly gay lawmaker in the state's 207-year history.

Aided by the Victory Fund, which works to elect LGBT candidates to political office, the Lakewood city councilwoman won the May 4 Democratic primary for the 13th district nomination for the Ohio state house of representatives. There are no Republican contenders, and an independent candidate quit the race last week, so Antonio is all but guaranteed to win the general election in November.

"We're looking forward to finally adding Ohio to the list of states where our community has a voice in state government," Victory Fund president and CEO Chuck Wolfe wrote in a press release. "The most dynamic and important fights for our rights are happening in state legislatures, so it's vital to have people like Nickie at the table of power."
