A campaign to get Modern Family's gay couple to show a little more affection on-screen has become maddening for Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cameron, husband to Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).

Stonestreet, who is straight, said the Facebook campaign was "wasted energy."

"We're a show that obviously is forward- and progressive-thinking," he said to New York magazine. "To adopt a baby on prime-time television is way more taboo than a kiss, and obviously Mitchell and Cameron are going to experience everything in their relationship. Unfortunately, I've been tweeted and sent messages saying that because I'm straight, I don't get to have an opinion on that, which really disappoints me. I play the character and I think I get to have an opinion on it."

The writers and producers of the show, which received a Peabody Award Tuesday, have also said that episodes next season would address the lack of affection.
