An openly gay 24-year-old with only $150 in campaign donations and no college diploma has won the Democratic primary for the 45th district of Kentucky's house of representatives.

Matthew Vanderpool beat out Mark Coblenz, a 50-year-old patent lawyer and veteran who raised approximately $6,000 for his campaign. The two were in a race to decide who will try to unseat the incumbent, Republican state representative Stan Lee.
