The leader of the Australian Marriage Equality group denounced the outing of David Campbell, the former transit minister from New South Wales, as a "gay witch hunt." The MP was secretly filmed leaving a gay sex club this week.
Campbell, who is married with two children, resigned from his cabinet position Thursday after Channel 7 caught him visiting a gay sauna near Sydney, to which he allegedly drove using a taxpayer-funded car. Campbell said he planned to retain his position as a member of parliament.
According to Australian gay site Same Same, "Alex Greenwich of the Australian Marriage Equality lobby group was one of several people who contacted Same Same to express their concern over the item. He says he rarely comments on issues away from same-sex marriage, but brands the 7 story a 'gay witch hunt.'"
"The story was presented by 7 News as 'misuse of a government paid car', but the issue of whether Campbell is secretly gay or not is the real reason he is being targeted, Greenwich concludes," reports Same Same.
