Judge: ID Donors to Maine’s Gay Marriage Ban

A preliminary ruling by a federal magistrate judge has ordered that the names of donors who helped to finance last year's repeal of Maine's marriage equality law should be released to state officials, according to The Portland Press Herald.

In a ruling dated Sunday, U.S. magistrate judge John Rich III said the National Organization for Marriage -- which donated $1.9 million to the marriage ban -- should release the names of donors dating back to January 1, 2009.

Those names wouldn't have to be made public but could be shared with state officials.

Before Rich's order can take effect, a federal judge has to sign off on it, a move that could take a couple of weeks.
