Obama Angriest at McChrystal Allies Comment
Among the many problematic comments uttered by former Afghanistan commander Gen. Stanley McChrystal in a Rolling Stone profile, his contempt for U.S. allies, including a remark in which his aide dismissed a dinner appointment with a French minister as "fucking gay," most angered President Barack Obama.
According to Politico, "The passage that
really torqued the president, advisers say, was McChrystal's reported
contempt for U.S. allies in Afghanistan -- especially the French --
illustrated in the story by McChrystal's reluctance to meet a senior
official in Paris, a dinner appointment one McChrystal aide called
'gay.'... Obama, the administration official said, was astounded and
alarmed by 'the effect it would have on the allies' in Afghanistan, who
have been asked to shed blood and 'who will be asked to do more' if the
U.S. is to begin pulling out by July 2011."
As a result of the article, President Obama accepted the resignation of McChrystal at the White House on Wednesday and promptly announced that Gen. David Petraeus would replace him at a critical juncture for the war in Afghanistan.
