South Bend Wrestles Over Antidiscrimination Law
In a contentious meeting, the South Bend, Ind. Common Council voted on Monday night to indefinitely table a proposed employment nondiscrimination ordinance for LGBT persons after one council member said the proposal language was too vague to support.
According to the South Bend Tribune, one the measure's leading sponsors, council member Olivia Davis, sought a continuance when it became clear that she did not have the five votes necessary to pass the proposal.
The two-hour meeting was attended by both local gay rights supporters and antigay activists. "I'm not against people who are gay," said meeting attendee Henry Davis. "I love you. However, I don't love your behavior."
