Democrats in New York continue to swing at Republican attorney general nominee Dan Donovan over his opposition to marriage equality.

Last Thursday, following the federal ruling that struck down Proposition 8, the New York state Democratic Party called out Donovan, the Staten Island district attorney, for his long-term avoidance of statements about marriage equality. The effort resulted in an admission from his spokesperson to a state politics blog that he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman, but the spokesperson said Donovan was committed to upholding a marriage equality law if it passes the state legislature.

Noting that state attorneys general in favor of equality can fight to change the law, as they have done in California and Massachusetts, the New York State Democrats released a statement Wednesday that attacks Donovan for his opposition. It includes comments from leaders of the Empire State Pride Agenda, the HRC Campaign for New York Marriage, the Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City, and LGBT elected officials.

"New Yorkers, committed to a fair and just society, need an attorney general who personally supports marriage equality," said state assembly member Deborah Glick. "Dan Donovan's grudging comments about enforcing the law ring hollow."
