The Denver city council wants the federal government to allow legal U.S. residents to sponsor their foreign-born partners for residency, The Denver Post reports. A proclamation approved by the council Monday addresses pending federal legislation, sponsored by House members Diana DeGette and Jerrold Nadler and Sen. Patrick Leahy, that would offer legal residency to the partners of LGBT immigrants and their children.

Councilman Doug Linkhart was the leading supporter of the proclamation, which was approved on an 11-0 vote.
