TV Host Lied About Murder, Prosecuted
BBC television host Ray Gosling, who claimed he smothered his terminally ill lover with a pillow but was later found to be lying, will be prosecuted for wasting police time, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.
Gosling confessed to killing his lover who was dying of AIDS on the BBC documentary program Inside Out last February, saying his lover had been in terrible pain. When a doctor told Gosling there was nothing more that could be done, he said he asked the doctor to leave them alone and then "I picked up the pillow and smothered him until he was dead."
"The police established that there was sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of proving that Mr. Gosling's confession was false," says Helen Allen, a lawyer for the Crown Prosecuting Service, which investigates criminal cases. "After careful consideration of all the evidence I decided that Mr. Gosling should be prosecuted for wasting police time and advised the police to obtain a summons to that effect."
Gosling has since apologized for any hurt caused to the family of his former lover.
