The Duke University student government president vetoed legislation over the weekend that would revoke funding for the College Republicans group after it was revealed the group's openly gay chairman (Justin Robinette, pictured), was forced to leave the organization because of his sexual orientation.

The student government voted last week to take away the College Republicans' funding and to decharter the group after learning about the situation and of the harassing communications Robinette and his supporters received.

Student government president Mike Lefevre said he made the decision to veto both measures after the College Republicans chairman and vice chairman resigned from their positions.

"It didn't make sense to veto one and not the other," Lefevre said, according to The Duke Chronicle. "Students involved in this mess will no longer be leading the organization . ... It's really unjust to the club if we punish them for something that happened last year, [when] the people who did that faced the repercussions."
