No Gay Couples on Kiss Cam
Gay Cardinals fans attending Saturday's "Out at the Ballpark" event at St. Louis's Busch Stadium tried but were unsuccessful at landing a spot on the scoreboard's kiss cam, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
A grassroots effort to get a gay couple on the kiss cam started last week, and the Cardinals responded to queries but made no promises, pointing out that the cam surfs the crowd at random.
But local bar manager Harrison Roberts, who led the effort, told The Advocate that fans were hoping the Cardinals would be open to featuring a gay couple. The weekend prior, gay sports fans were upset to see two straight men on the kiss cam, playing it up for the crowd to jeers.
Pride St. Louis's Ethan Barnett said the fact that the Cardinals approached his organization to set up the "Out at the Ballpark" event was a step in the right direction.
"We're really excited about it," Barnett said. "It's the first time the Cardinals have gone so far as to look us up as a community and approach us. Everyone's been welcoming."
